Ruth M. Meyers, 94, of Elkader, died Sunday, December 20, 2015, at the Elkader Care Center. Ruth M. (Bauer) (Hrubes) Meyers was born on February 19, 1921, in Bismarck, North Dakota to Ralph and Clara (Uhlenhake) Bauer. She was the oldest of seven children. She attended elementary and high school in Wesley, Iowa, graduating in 1939.
After her formal schooling she worked as a bookkeeper for her father in the implement business in Wesley, Iowa. She followed her love of music by playing piano in a local band called “Silver Moon” that played throughout North Central Iowa. Her love of music especially (polka and waltzes) continued throughout her life. On April 26, 1944 she married William J Hrubes at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Wesley, Iowa. They made their home in Wesley, Iowa for 37 years and raised five children. After William’s death in January of 1982, she married Howard Meyers on November 26, 1983, and moved to Strawberry Point, Iowa, and after his death in February 2009, she moved to an apartment in Elkader, Iowa.
She was an excellent cook and her children and grandchildren enjoyed her “molasses cookies” and “cinnamon rolls” that she made for all special occasions.
Ruth had a very strong sense of faith and family that she passed onto her children. She enjoyed keeping a diary of her daily happenings. She kept a very detailed scrapbook of her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren’s accomplishments. She also enjoyed writing to pen-pals throughout the Midwest.
She is survived by her son, Brian (Kay) Hrubes of Ocala, Florida; three daughters, Denise (Keith) Riley of Cherokee, Iowa, Joann (Bob) Hildman of Algona, Iowa, Wanda (Mike) Casper of Elkader, Iowa; 16 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; step children include Ruth (Don) Hamilton, Jane (Chuck) Sparrgrove, Kathy Meyers, Linda (Dennis) Speth, Becky (LeRoy) Messler, Wendall Meyers; step daughter-in-law Karen Meyers; 14 step-grandchildren and 21 step-great-grandchildren, one brother Bill and two sisters Clara Lu and Marlene.
She was preceded by her husbands, William Hrubes in 1982 and Howard Meyers in 2009; daughter, Wilma in 1999; one stepson, Daniel Meyers and two step grandchildren; two brothers Ralph and John and one sister, Bernadette.
