Annette Marie Hird, 51, of Volga, died February 16, 2016, at North Hawaii Community Hospital in Waimea, Hawaii, due to complications of a near drowning accident.
Annette was born to Lester J. and Donna M. (Koch) Fleming on December 17, 1964, at Mercy Hospital in Oelwein. She grew up on the family farm south of Volga. She attended Central Community School in Elkader. Upon graduation, she attended Marshalltown Community College and became a Certified Surgical Tech. She worked as a Surgical Tech at Central Hospital in Elkader for over 16 years. She developed an interest and love for EMS while working in Elkader. She worked her way up the certification levels and became a paramedic. In 2002, she began working at Covenant Medical Center in Waterloo on the ambulance service. In 2010, she was hired to a Flight Paramedic position on Air Care II, also in Waterloo. At the time of her death, she was a few months away from taking her nursing boards in her quest to become a Flight Nurse.
On June 1st, 1985, she married John Hird. Together they raised two sons, Christofer and Alan. She was very proud of her boys. She was a fanatical fisher woman, always wanting to catch the biggest or the most, which she usually did. She was an avid hunter. She hunted turkey, deer, mushrooms and antler sheds. In November 2013, she hunted and harvested a buffalo with a rifle she inherited from her dad. This fulfilled a dream of his – she was her father’s daughter.
Annette also like to garden, knit, cross stitch, crochet and sew. She made many things for her family and her grandchildren.
Her greatest passion was her grandchildren. She loved to talk to them on the phone or Facetime with them. The trips out to visit them were too few or too short in her mind. She was on vacation with her entire family at the time of her death.
Annette is survived by her husband, John; her son, Christofer (Alaina) of Buckeye, AZ, her son, Alan (Jennifer) of Vista, CA; three grandchildren, Olivia of Buckeye, Hailey and Jackson of Vista; her mother, Donna Fleming of Volga, her sisters, Mary Jo (Brad) Bergan of Volga and Jody (Paul) Stempfle of Maynard; her brother, Paul (Lois) of Elkader; nieces and nephews, Matthew, (Mary), Justin and Megan Bergan, Scott and Jessica Stempfle and Trevor and Kelly Jo Fleming; two great nieces, Josie and Abbigail; her father-in-law, Jack Hird of Cascade; brothers-in-law, Ron, Bob, Norman and Jim; sisters-in-law, Carolyn, Elaine, Patty, Jeanne, Kathy and Nancy and her EMS Family.
She is preceded in death by her Dad, Lester; mother-in-law Lucille and her grandparents.
Per her wishes, she was a tissue donor, thus ending a life still trying to help others.
Also per her wishes, she was cremated and her ashes will be scattered in the woods where she dearly loved to be.
