Linda Catherine Walz, 70, died Thursday, April 7, 2016, at the Maple Crest Manor Nursing Home, Fayette, Iowa. She was born July 7, 1945, to Gerald Roland and Rachel Ellen (Batchelder) Walz in Central City, Iowa.
After living in Central City for two years, her family made their home in Garnavillo for 8 years. At 5 years of age, Linda fell victim to the 1950 polio epidemic. In 1956, Linda’s parents purchased the “Family Farm” near Strawberry Point which is still in the family today.
Following her graduation from Strawberry Point High School in 1963, she attended Gates Business College in Waterloo where she graduated from the stenography program. Linda’s career included working at a law firm and a position with the Clayton County Clerk of Court. Later in the mid 1970's, when she could no longer work due to post polio complications, Linda moved to West Union.
Linda was no stranger to health and life challenges, which she accepted with a strong sense of faith and grace. She moved to nursing home care during the winter of 2011 living at the Good Samaritan Home, West Union, and later Maple Crest Manor, Fayette.
Her hobbies included crocheting, cross stitch, collecting angels, and knitting countless pairs of slippers. Linda enjoyed visits from family and friends, surfing the internet, bird watching, and she had a passion for befriending stray cats.
Survivors include her sister Rosalyn Hurley, sister-in-law Clementine Walz, brother-in-law Joe Bergan, many nieces and nephews, and many, many close friends.
Linda was preceded in death by her parents, brother Eldon Walz, sister Marilyn Bergan, brother-in-law Kenneth Hurley, niece Annette Walz and close friend Linda Johnson.
Leonard Funeral Home and Cremation Service, Elkader, assisted the family.
Inurnment will be held at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, Elkader, Iowa on May 1, 2016, at 1:30 p.m. with Rev. Dale J. Rausch, West Union officiating.
Linda will be deeply missed by her family and friends. A celebration of her life will be held at St. Joseph Parish Hall following inurnment.
