Sylvia Jean Spykerman, 75, passed away Monday, October 31, 2016, at Central Community Hospital in Elkader. She was born September 28, 1941, in Independence, the daughter of Willard and Evelyn (Eagen) Hertzberg. She was a 1961 graduate of Jesup High School, and then attended Upper Iowa University for two years.
Sylvia was united in marriage to Raymond Mahoney.They became the parents of one son, Mike. They later divorced and in 1977, moved from Cedar Rapids to an acreage in Clayton County, where she lived her remaining years.
In 1985, she married Jerry Spykerman. They raised Arabian horses and raced in endurance races throughout the Midwest for a number of years.
She was an avid gardener and Master Gardener. Her last years of employment were at the Clayton County Extension office. Sylvia judged many 4-H projects throughout Northeast Iowa. She was an active member Highland Lutheran Church; where she served as treasurer for many years and worked at many fund raisers. The couple also saw to it that every grave in the church cemetery had a flower for Memorial Day.
Survivors include her husband, Jerry Spykerman; son, Mike (Paula) Mahoney and two grandchildren, Caitlin Marie Mahoney and Hailey Elizabeth Mahoney.
Sylvia was preceded in death by her parents.
